Want to know my absolute favorite session to shoot? Hands down, it is photographing a birth. I tend to photograph a handful of births a year because being on-call is tough when scheduling other sessions, but my birth clients are special to me in such a different way. Birth sessions are emotional and tiring and filled with a level of joy that is contagious. It is those mix of emotions that have led to some of my most intimate, favorite images to date.
I saw the text come through at 4:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning in November. The words sprinkled across the screen led to a feeling of excitement mixed with nervousness mixed with a little splash of peace. The soon-to-be-parents were on their way to the hospital, and I was left with a smile across my face as I packed extra camera cards for the day ahead.
Lauren + Jared’s journey to parenthood was longer and harder than originally expected. A story very similar to many clients I work with, yet one that ended so happily on a chilly morning in November.
I arrived at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge shortly after 8:00 a.m. and made my way to Labor + Delivery with camera in hand. I quietly knocked on the door and found Lauren comfortably laying in bed as she had recently received her epidural. Jared, along with his parents and Lauren’s sister, excitedly made last minute predictions of baby’s possible gender while Lauren rested as much as she could.
Generally births (especially with first time mothers) tend to be longer. I am usually at the hospital awhile waiting on the arrival of a little one. However, Baby Roth was completely different. Shortly after I arrived that morning, Lauren was checked and given the okay to start pushing. After a short good-bye to Jared’s parents and one last finger prick, Lauren was surrounded by her husband and sister as she began the delivery process.
Shortly after pushing, the doctor arrived for delivery. Baby Roth joined the world alongside her brave mother, excited father, and tear-filled godmother. Kennedy Kate was welcomed with joyous smiles and lots of love weighing a perfect 6lbs. 11oz.! Congratulations to the Roth Family! Check out my favorites from Kennedy’s arrival below!
Interested in scheduling a birth session? Let’s chat! Birth sessions are a documentary style session where the emotions of baby’s arrival are captured. I take a “fly-on-the-wall” approach and photograph labor, delivery, skin-to-skin, first measurements, first bath, and meeting of the family. Each delivery is unique and so special to a family. Take the time to capture your little one’s first moments and the emotions of the day. I promise, you will fall in love with your images! Inquire about a session right here.
