One question I get asked frequently is what to photograph baby in for a newborn session. There are tons of options out there, and I love using different pieces from outfits to swaddles. But, my absolute favorite look for a brand new little one is a simple onesie. The onesie does everything you need it to do for a newborn session and then more.
Here’s why the onesie has my heart for in-home newborn sessions:
1 | Fit
Your newborn baby will be tiny, which is what I want to capture in photographs. You want an outfit that will fit baby snug, show off baby’s size and details, and photographs well. Because of the sizing and fit, a onesie can do all those things. The onesie can fit snug around baby allowing me to capture all those newborn baby details, like tiny fingers and toes and baby rolls. Tip: Purchase one or two onesies in the newborn size to fit baby snug.
2 | Simplicity
With a newborn session, the focus is baby. You want an outfit that will blend and highlight your baby. I love a simple color scheme for photographs, and onesies are an easy way to achieve that look. Soft, solid colors, such as whites, creams, greys, or pastels, photograph beautifully for newborns and can easily be found in any onesie style. Tip: Add more style to your photographs by selecting a kimono style onesie like these.
3 | Ease
Sometimes the unexpected occurs during a session and a quick outfit change has to happen (hello, spit up and a diaper leak). Every mama out of there has at least three onesies perfectly folded in their newborn’s nursery. You can always grab another, change baby, and continue going with ease. It makes a session run a little smoother knowing you have a backup outfit ready to go.
So, what do you think? Do you love the onesie?
