One of the most enjoyable parts of newborn photography is being invited into your home and photographing the first images of your new baby! I love seeing the way the nursery is decorated and the inspiration behind the choices. I love hearing about the first few days at home and the amount of sleep you are getting (or lacking!). And, I love capturing photographs in spaces that are meaningful to you.
However, it is easy to forget in those first few days of parenthood what to expect for your in-home newborn session. Don’t fret… Here are a few tips to prepare!
1 | Be Comfortable + Go Neutral.
Select clothing options that are comfortable for you and your family. The inspiration behind in-home newborn sessions is documenting “a day in the life of” type of photographs. The session is casual and relaxed and aimed to capture natural moments with your family and your new baby at home. I always suggest neutral colors (like creams, ivories, grays, or even soft blues or pinks) when selecting outfits as they photograph beautifully and compliment any type of home decor.
2 | Remember the Lighting.
Lighting plays such an important role in photography. So, what does that mean for you as a new mom and inviting a photographer in your home? The photographs will take place in areas of your home with great natural light (natural light = light coming through windows and doors). Remember to select a session time that highlights the light in your home. Always ask if you have any questions regarding your space, photography, and lighting and what would work best. It easy to move a few items around in your home or lift blinds on your windows, to create the ideal lighting situation.
3 | Allow for Flexibility.
Flexibility brings two thoughts to mind: furniture and baby. First, let’s start with furniture. It is not uncommon to move some items around (especially to allow more light to come through in rooms). This may include opening curtains, sliding a chair over, or even moving an end-table to increase the light in the room. I will always ask before moving anything in your home as I want to make sure you are comfortable with the decision. Just know that I aiming to create the best photographs for your session. And flexibility with baby. That’s easy. This new little baby you brought home will dictate how the session will flow. So, if he or she needs a minute in between posing and swaddle changes, we can gladly accommodate any needs!
4 | Relax + Enjoy.
The most important tip! Remember your session will be beautiful and special to you and your family. Enjoy the time spent cuddling and kissing your new baby and be prepared to share all of your newborn photographs with your family in the coming weeks – They will love them!
